Where do I begin? Julie Lessman fans, watch out! This book opened with quite a punch! Actually, it was more of a hearty smack of a wooden stick – wielded by a stubborn, beautiful teacher towards a grouchy, defensive man – but it grabbed my attention nevertheless. If that doesn’t jump-start the wheels of curiosity spinning in your head, I don’t know what will!
I was already laughing by the end of the first chapter and I happily hopped on the San Francisco railroad car along with this mismatched pair to see where their “battle of the wits” would carry them.
This second installment in The Heart of San Francisco series invites readers back into the McClare family, spotlighting Allison’s independent journey to teach at her mother’s school as well as defy and forget men altogether. This firecracker has been burned too many times by love to trust another man with her heart again. If only she could succeed at avoiding one jaded, handsome detective that draws more of her ire than she can stomach and attracts her more than she cares to admit.
Detective Nick Barone is battling his own world of trust issues, society problems, and denial when he is thrown into a business deal with none other than his nemesis – the lovely Miss McClare – against both of their wishes. When a deeper relationship begins to spark despite their best efforts and the contract between Nick and her uncle, they must fight their fears, betrayal, family obligations, and more if they will ever learn to trust and love again.
I love it when characters are not only fighting their circumstances, but when they’re also struggling to face the honest truth about themselves and the ones they love. That struggle, the surprise, the surrender. It’s a beautiful thing.
Dare to Love Again truly has it all. The humor, the romantic tension, the surprising plot twists. It entertains and it teaches. It’s quite a spiritual roller-coaster for Allison and Nick, as well as the rest of the McClare family you’ve already met in Love At Any Cost. Your heart is with each of them in their risky pursuits and you meet even more memorable characters you’re going to love in this story. No surprise there. Julie Lessman knows how to write them.
I closed the book with a contented sigh and a smile. What more can I ask for? Thanks, Julie, once again for crafting a story I won’t forget and adding dear members to my fictional family.
