Happy Friday, friends. What are you reading this week? It’s time to share our first lines!
Today I’m drawing a book off my bookshelf that I’ve had for awhile now. I love Deeanne Gist’s books and was excited to find this on sale for $2.00! What a bargain! π I’m in the middle of reading it right now.
Ready for the first line? π

And the first line is:
Biltmore Estate
Near Asheville, North Carolina
August 1898
“Like a butterfly breaking free from its confining cocoon, Tillie Reese emerged from the barren, tan-colored servants’ hall into the opulence of Biltmore’s main level.”

Have a great weekend, my friends!!
Happy Friday!
Today, my first line Friday is from Christmas at Grey Goose Lodge by Phyllis Clark Nichols…..
When Maude opened the door to the Christmas closet in early December that year, she had no reason to think there would only be nine more Christmases celebrated at Grey Sage.
Hi Susan! I’m so curious where that story is going! Thanks for sharing a great first line. Have a great weekend!
Happy Friday! I will have to check out her books. The covers look fun! My first line (a little longer) is from Anne Greene’s Avoiding the Mistletoe:
Olivia Rose Baker glanced up from the headlines in the Massachusetts Matrimonial Gazette. With an explosive smack, she slapped the newspaper on the top of the breakfast table. “No! I refuse.”
What a fun title of a book. I’ll have to look that one up, Becky. Thanks! π
My first line is from a historical fiction book, too, though mine is a Medieval book by Joyce DiPastana, The Girl by the River:
Robert almost tripped over the scythe.
Historical fiction is so diverse and fun. So glad you stopped by, Phyllis!
I have not yet read any of Deanna Gist’s books but one of my former co-workers raved about her, so I know she’s good.
Iβm getting in the Christmas Spirit with my FLF blog post, but here are the first lines from the book Iβm currently reading:
βBeing a teacher was turning out to be a little like having the flu. Simon OβKeefe. Her heart broke for him at the same time her stomach twisted with dread for herself.β From The Calico and Cowboy Romance Collection by Mary Connealy.
Yes, definitely check out her books, Suzie. The ones I’ve read of hers are so good! I love Mary Connealy too! π
Oooo, I haven’t read this one from DeeAnne yet… you tempt me! Love Held Captive by Shelley Shepard Gray is featured on my blog today with a giveaway but Iβm currently reading The Vexing by Tamara Leigh. Hereβs the first line:
Normandy, France
Early December 1161
Women were more trouble than they were worth. Or so Sir Durand Marshal told himself each time one dragged him into a mess like this one promised to do.
I LOVE that first line. π So glad you stopped by, Beth. I’m going to have to go enter in your giveaway. I love that series by Shelley. π
That looks like a great book!
Iβm sharing the first line from The Engagement Plot by Krista Phillips on my blog today, but Iβll share the first line from the book Iβm currently reading here. βIf youβre willing to admit it, you probably know me as Raine de Bourgh.β The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck by Bethany Turner.
I’ve heard about both those books and they sure look like fun reads. Thanks for sharing, Ellie!
I do enjoy Deeanne Gist’s novels, but I didn’t think this was as witty as some of her earlier books. I think A Bride in the Bargain is my favourite.
I’m sharing from Imperfect Justice by Cara Putman over on my blog today. But I’m currently reading Piercehaven by Robin Merrill, which is kind of a girls basketball version of Friday Night Lights, except set on an island off the coast of Maine. Here’s the first line:
She had expected it to be a poetic voyage. She had expected sunshine and whitecaps, a sea song to serenade her as she sailed toward her new home.
What a pretty first line. That’s a new one to me, Iola. Thanks for sharing.
A Bride in the Bargain is certainly one of my favorites too! π
Oh my goodness! I have had this series for years, but I still have not read it. π There are so many books on my bookshelves that I need to read. I didn’t realize it was set in Asheville either…beautiful city. Happy Saturday and Happy Thanksgiving Savanna!
I can totally relate. So many good books just waiting to be read. π I agree too… Asheville is such a pretty place.
Have a great weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving too, Heather!
This is a delightful story! I’ve visited The Biltmore House on numerous occasions and have read this story more than once since it first came out.
Thanks for visiting, Trisha. The Biltmore is definitely on my bucket list! π
