She studied humanities at Portland State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree focused on art history. As a homeschooling mom, Amber spends much of her time teaching everything from Shakespeare to science.

When she isn’t crafting with her kids, making dinner or driving to dance classes, Amber is either reading or writing about her favorite time in American history. The Revolutionary era has captured her imagination from the time she was in middle school. Through her books, Amber hopes to not only give readers a glimpse into the past, but to instill in them a lasting love of liberty.

Welcome to the blog, Amber. I’m so honored to have you here today. I absolutely LOVE the covers of your books! I can’t wait to read them!

What part of So Rare a Gift did you enjoy researching the most?

sorareagiftHi Savanna! Thank you so much for having me!! Love this questionβ€”and it’s actually a bit hard to answer, but I have to say, what I enjoyed the most was learning about the British Army. That’s not to say I’m an expert by any means, but I did want to make sure I was representing the soldiers/soldiering correctly, etc, so I did my best to make sure I had my facts right. And since I had a pretty good grasp on the American side of things, I found the British stuff to be very interesting.

Have you visited any of the locations from your books? If not, what places are at the top of your list to visit someday?

Yes, I have actually! Several years ago, before I published SO FAIR A LADY, I traveled to Sandwich and Plymouth for research and it was completely wonderful. I would go back there in a heartbeat, if I could. Absolutely my favorite place to visit, not only because of the rich history, but because it’s just incredibly beautiful. I mean, it’s Cape Cod! πŸ˜‰

Awww, how cool! I soooo want to go there some day. πŸ˜‰

so-true-a-loveWhat would you say you’ve learned the most from the women of your β€œDaughters of His Kingdom” series?

Love this question! (Love all of them!) All the heroines (Eliza, Kitty and Anna) are unique and go through their own growth throughout the course of their stories. I believe what I’ve learned most is that I need to be courageous now, in this troubled time, like they were brave in their time. It’s difficult for us to really comprehend how frightening the war was for the colonists. Their entire way of life was being threatened and many of them were literally starvingβ€”literally giving their lives for what they believed in. Sometimes I am so overwhelmed and saddened by what is happening in the world around us, but I try and remember what my hero, Henry said to his wife, Anna: β€œWe must live truth. Fearlessly.”I really believe that and want to live that way.

Oh, I love that!

I read on your website that you homeschool your two daughters. What is one of your greatest blessings of homeschooling them? And what’s your greatest challenge?

Yes, I do homeschool and I love it. Every family is different and it certainly doesn’t work for everyone, but I know it’s right for our family. I was homeschooled growing up, so making the decision to do the same for my children was almost a given. Without a doubt the greatest blessing is being able to teach them the gospel along with everything else. I believe God is so intertwined with everythingβ€”science, math, history, artβ€”that it’s just natural to talk about Him in our daily conversations and lessons. My greatest challenge is being creative. I am not great at coming up with my own ideas for school. Thank goodness for Pinterest and other sites where super-creative moms share their ideas! We’d be sunk otherwise. LOL!

Haha! You sound like me. I was homeschooled as well and can’t wait to teach my little girl when she grows up, but I worry about my lack of creativity too. πŸ™‚ Pinterest is awesome for inspiration!

sofairaladyIt’s clear to see that history is very important to you. If you had to pick just one historical figure from the past, who would you enjoy meeting in person and why?

Oh my word, that is so hard!!! Wow, narrowing it down to one person…I’ll have to think about that for a second. *fast forward twenty minutes* LOL! I think for all intents and purposes, I’ll stick with American History, because that way it narrows the field considerably. HAHA! I would really love to meet and talk to Abigail Adams. She was such a brave and forward thinking woman, so wise. I would love to talk politics especiallyβ€”politics of her time–but also just ask what everyday life was like for a woman in those days. (My second choice, which is pretty much a tie for first, is without a doubt George Washington. I admire him more than I can ever say. The more I learn about who he was, the more I am in awe of him. Truly a great man of faith.)

Thank you so much for joining us today, Amber. I’m so excited to read this series. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!
