Savanna:Β Welcome to The Engrafted Word, DiAnn. Congratulations on your newest release, Double Cross. As your wrote this story, did your main characters β Laurel, Daniel, and Wilmington β ever surprise you or teach you an important lesson along the way?
DiAnn:Β Laurel taught me the value of commitment. Although she sometimes viewed her work with the FBI as the most important part of her life, she showed me dedication in action.
Daniel never viewed his commitment to his grandparents as a burden. He loved them unconditionally, and that meant doing whatever was necessary to keep them safe. When others understand love is an action verb, we see a picture of Christ.
Wilmington was a difficult character to read. Did I believe him when he said heβd changed? His actions were confusing. From him, I learned to trust God and allow truth to surface.
Savanna:Β You’ve written historical, contemporary, and non-fiction books. Is one genre easier to write than the others? If so, can you explain why?
DiAnn:Β I much prefer contemporary romantic suspense. To me, the contemporary aspect is more difficult than historical because technology is ever-changing. My choice takes more work, but itβs satisfying to provide a contemporary story that shows characters solving real problems of today. Our lives are filled with unpredictable danger, thus writing suspense engages the characters with the readers confirming good with sacrifice overcomes evil.
Savanna:Β As a mentor and speaker to writers everywhere, what is one of your favorite workshops you’ve presented?
DiAnn:Β The Dance of Character and Plot – a continuous workshop session that shows the power of character in every line of a novel: plot, dialogue, setting, narrative, emotion, body language, and symbolism. I enjoy using powerpoint/keynote to enhance points that can be humorous, serious, or slightly skewed.
Savanna:Β I so enjoyed getting to attend your class at the last ACFW conference. Can you share with us a special memory from your very first conference?
DiAnn:Β My very first conference was at Wheaton Write to Publish. I was incredibly nervous. While waiting for a shuttle bus to take me to the campus, a tall gentleman asked if I was attending the conference. I said yes, and he introduced himself as T. Davis Bunn. He later endorsed a novel for me. A wonderful writer and friend. Oh – a year later, my first novel was published.
Savanna:Β Wow. That is so neat. Love hearing those little stories and seeing how God brought writing friends together.
Can you tell us a little piece of writing advice that has made a difference in your career?
DiAnn:Β My writing is a ministry, a calling. Yes, my primary focus is to entertain readers, but with that goal is also a need to inspire readers to become better people and encourage them in their lifeβs journey. When readers can identify with a character who struggles with a problem but does not give up, they are entertained, inspired, and encouraged.
Savanna:Β Is there anything else you’d like to add? Any upcoming projects you can share with us?
DiAnn:Β Iβd like to respond with two quotes.
Love. Fall in love and stay in love. Write only what you love, and love what you write. The key word is love. You have to get up in the morning and write something you love, something to live for. Ray Bradbury
Never, never, never give up. Winston Churchill
And one of my own…
A novel is a living breathing organism. It has the power to entertain, shape, and inspire lives, but a Christian novel does even more. Itβs a seed planter to grow believers into the kingdom of God. DiAnn Mills
Savanna:Β Love those, DiAnn. Thanks so much for sharing with us today. It’s been great having you as our guest.

Thank you for your sweet words, Melanie. We appreciate you!
This may seem strange but due to nostalgia, loving my daddy, and living with Dystonia, my favorite quote is one he repeated over and over, ” Life isn’t fair, get use to it.” He always meant for me not to look at the bad or unfair, but to realize “fair” is in the eye of the beholder. He always says God is just, not fair. My daddy’s wisdom has greatly helped me live a joyful life despite the hardships. Wouldn’t trade it for anything!
I totally understand what you mean, Rachael, and I appreciate you sharing that with us. You’re exactly right… Our God is a just God. What peace it brings my heart to know that even in our difficulties He is in control. Blessings to you!
My favorite quote is “Success is a Journey, not a Destination”. That encourages me in my writing. I really enjoyed this interview with DiAnn. Thanks for the interview and giveaway!
Great quote, Loraine, especially for writers! I needed to hear that. Thank you! π And good luck to you in the giveaway.
Trust God and allow truth to surface. I like that! Truth is very important to me…

Savanna, What a wonderful and inspiring interview with DiAnn. Thank You.
DiAnn, I have not read your books yet but I am looking forward to reading them soon.
I love your beautiful quote about the power of novels. As a reader I am deeply touched by what an author chooses to create, and as a Christian I want to read books that are encouraging and leave me with some nugget of hope or spiritual insight.
Thank you for the giveaway, and I am grateful to learn of your books.
Savanna, I follow your blog by e mail.
It’s always nice to see you here, Jackie. I’m glad you enjoyed our interview. Thank you for your sweet words. Happy Reading! And thanks for following my blog too. π
These books look great! One of my favorite quotes is “She reads as one might breathe, to fill up and live”.
Love that quote too, Amelia! π Hope you get to read DiAnn’s books soon.
Savanna, thank you for sharing your interview with Diann. I was impressed by her desire to use her writing skills as a ministry. Her words can encourage those of us who are already Christians and motivate non-believers to make their decision for Christ. I appreciate this awesome giveaway.
One of my favorite quotes is attributed to John Wesley. βDo all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.β
Blessings to both of you!
Connie
Sorry DiAnn, to misspell your name.

Hello Savanna and DiAnn. Enjoyed your post. DiAnn, you and I are neighbors, sort of. I live in Pasadena on southeast side of Houston. Would love to meet you. Do you ever have book signings here? Thanks Savanna for hosting DiAnn. enjoy your blog. Hope i get to be one of the winners. Maxie
Hi Maxie! That is so cool that you live near DiAnn. Hope you get to meet up with her someday. She is just as sweet in person! Thanks for following my blog. I’m hoping a giveaway win for you as well! π
I don’t know if I have a fvaorite quote.. One that I know (And that always makes me laugh) Is: Outside of a dog, a books a mans best friend; inside of a dog it’s too dark to read!
Oh, and Groucho Marx said that π
Haha! That’s a great one, Sierra. Another new one to me. π
Totally love this genre but haven’t read anything by DiAnn! I’d better get to work π
You came to the right place then, Danielle. Hope you get to read some of DiAnn’s books soon and enjoy them! π
Scripture is full quotes! One right off the top of my head would be this; Matthew 22:36-37 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?βJesus said to him, ββYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.βThis is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: βYou shall love your neighbor as yourself.βOn these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.β See? There are so many nuggets in scripture that I couldn’t possibly pin down a favorite quote!
I know there are some good secular quotes out there, but I like to turn to God’s word. There I gain wisdom & not just a “feel good” tickle my ears kind of thing! No offense to anyone, but I gain so much more out of God’s word!
DiAnn, it would seem we are on the same thought wave! I just love what you had to say about your own quote “A novel is a living breathing organism. It has the power to entertain, shape, and inspire lives, but a Christian novel does even more. Itβs a seed planter to grow believers into the kingdom of God.” This is what I absolutely love about Christian authors who have an eternal view when they write a book! Do I want a good, entertaining story…of course I do….but I also want to close that final chapter & have a little closer walk with my God. I love when characters struggle with something, only to find them leaning ever closer to Him for strength! Maybe they just might teach me something new about faith or encourage me in some way. That is the anticipation I love about a new book…how will God use this author & story to speak to my life? π I’m so glad that their are authors such as yourself who have the same goal in mind.
I have just recently won a copy of “Double Cross”, so if I am chosen, I will be passing that on to my sister-in-law who is also an avid reader. I have not read or have a copy of “Firewall”. I now know what to expect out of these books and I am definitely looking forward to it!
Thank you DiAnn for the author interview & Savanna for your wonderful blog. I love learning all about different authors & finding some new books! As if I don’t have enough to read, lol! Blessings to both of you….to quote DiAnn….Expect an adventure!!
Thank you, Trixi, for everything you shared. Loved the verses and your thoughts here. You’re exactly right…. there’s nothing better to turn to than God’s word for the best quotes ever! π And the type of books – and authors – both of you mentioned are definitely what I look for too. Those stories are the kind that stick with you. I appreciate you following my blog, Trixi, and for always taking the time to comment. Have a great weekend!
nice quotes to share
Thanks for stopping by! π
One of my favorite quotes is, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway” by John Wayne.
That’s a good one! π Glad you could join us, Kim. Good luck in the giveaway.
DiAnn is a new author to me and I loved getting to know her through this interview Thank you for hosting her Savannah. I love that she sees writing as her ministry and I love that she enjoys writing contemporary books. I dont really have a favorite quote but I like Eleanor Roosevelt – A woman is like a tea bag – you don’t know how strong she is until you put her in hot water.
Hi Maryann. I’m glad you enjoyed the interview. I hope you’ll be blessed by DiAnn’s writing as well. Love the quote you shared, by the way. π Good luck in the drawing!
I love DiAnn’s books! My favorite is Breach of Trust… I still think about it even though it’s been awhile. π Looking forward to Double Cross.
Don’t you just love it when books hang on to your heart like that? π Thanks for stopping in, Merry!
