Savanna:Β Welcome to The Engrafted Word, Heather, and Congratulations on the recent release of your debut novel, Swept to Sea. I can’t wait to read it. π Can you tell us what first inspired the story?
Heather:Β Thank you! At first, I just wanted to write a story about three best friends who are English ladies. Then I wanted to somehow transport them to the Caribbean and involve pirates. I ended coming up with the story of Lady Eden Trenton, who stows away on a pirate ship to escape her abusive fiancΓ©. The trilogy will focus on her other two friends, Aimee and Ivy.
Savanna:Β Sounds very intriguing!Β I still can’t believe you published your first story at 16.Β That’s incredible! π When readers look back after reading this novel, what’s one lesson you hope they take with them?
Heather:Β One of the main things that my characters Caspian and Eden learn throughout Swept to Sea is to place their trust in God, rather than in their own hands. This lesson can apply to everyone, and I hope my readers take that away as well.
Savanna: Since we’re both Missouri girls, is there a famous Missourian β past or present β you would enjoy ( or would have enjoyed ) having lunch with and getting to chat?
Heather:Β There are so many cool people from Missouri! I would love to have lunch with Harry S. Trumanβheβs a pretty neat guy! Iβve been to the Harry S. Truman library in Independence and I really loved getting to learn more about him and his presidency than my history books tell.
Savanna:Β Can you tell us an author who challenges/inspires you and why?
Heather:Β I am really inspired by my three favorite authors: MaryLu Tyndall, Deeanne Gist, and Mary Connealy. I love MaryLuβs sea-fearing adventures, Deeanneβs love stories, and Maryβs comedy. I strive to put at least a little of each of these in my story.
Savanna: What is one of your most unforgettable moments from your writing career to date?
Heather:Β I think lately, my most unforgettable moment was when I was recently interviewed by my local news station about Swept to Sea. It was such a fun, exciting event. I absolutely loved it.
Savanna:Β I bet! I enjoyed watching the interview. (You all can catch it too. Click here.)
Anything else you’d like to share? Can you tell us a little bit about your next book you’re working on?
Heather:Β My next novel, Carried Home, focuses on Gage and Ivy, who are secondary characters in Swept to Sea. It follows their journey back to England, where Ivyβs younger brother is waiting for her. Gage is new at being a captain, and he struggles with his insecurities in commanding his ship.
Savanna:Β We’ll be watching for it!Β π Thank you so much for joining us today, Heather!Β Where can readers go to keep in touch with you?
