I was totally intrigued by this story the moment I heard about it and first saw the cover. That curious fascination stayed with me through the entire book too. This was the first book by Roseanna White I’d had the privilege of reading. Now I understand why readers are always singing her praises. πŸ™‚

Rosemary was a strong character from the get-go and her gritty determination and bravery stole the show for me. I loved the natural conflict that arose from our heroine being a thief. She does what she must to survive and in the process discovers who she really is beyond the orphan. She’s passionate about her family and her work. It’s no surprise our hero is drawn to her.

Peter is endearing throughout and offers a warmth to the story that otherwise contains some heavy topics in dark places. His nervous stutter made him down-to-earth and his mysterious secrets carried the story and its twists nicely.

There were a few moments when the pace seemed a bit slow for me, but other than that I really enjoyed this historical fiction. The romance is light and the friendship is sweet. You might even be surprised at the ending. I know I was. I’m looking forward to the rest of this series.

I received a free copy from the publisher. No review, positive or otherwise, was requiredβ€”all opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

She’s Out to Steal His Name.
Will He Steal Her Heart Instead?

Rosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of former urchins that helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of London. Grown now, they are no longer pickpocketsβ€”now they focus on high value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. Rosemary’s challenge of a lifetime comes when she’s assigned to determine whether a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany. How does one steal a family’s history, their very name?

Rumors swirl around Peter Holstein. Awkward and solitary, but with access to the king, many fear his influence. But Peter can’t help his German last name and wants to prove his loyalty to the crownβ€”so he can go back to anonymously writing a series of popular adventure novels. When Rosemary arrives on his doorstop pretending to be a well- credentialed historian, Peter believes she’s the right person to help him dig through his family’s past.

Anger and danger continue to mount, though, and both realize they’re in a race against time to discover the truthβ€”about Peter’s past and about the undeniable attraction kindling between them.

Roseanna M. White pens her novels beneath her Betsy Ross flag, with her Jane Austen action figure watching over her. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two children, editing and designing, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels and novellas, ranging from biblical fiction to American-set romances to her British series. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to make their way into her novels…to offset her real life, which is blessedly boring.Being educated at St. John’s College (the Great Books School) taught Roseanna to ask questions, to value conversation, and to never accept the simple answer without exploring it for herself. She and her family make their home in the mountains of West Virginia where she and her husband both grew up. Roseanna is a member of ACFW, a frequent speaker at writers events and small groups of readers, and an unabashed email addict.
