Welcome to the blog, Margaret. I’m so honored to have you here today. Congratulations on your newest release, Cowboy Charm School. It sounds like such a fun book!
What do you love most about your hero and your heroine in this story?
First of all, thank you so much for having me, Savanna. I’m delighted to be here. To answer your question: Kate owns a candy shop and I love that she’s not just selling sweets, she sends each of her customers out the door with something to smile about.
Brett is a Texas Ranger and I love that he always wants to do what’s right, even at great sacrifice. When Brett accidently causes Kate to break up with her fiancé, he feels terrible. Determined to get the couple back together again, he puts Kate’s romance-challenged fiancé through charm school and ignores his own growing feelings for her. Brett aims to make things right, no matter the cost to himself.
When and where did you first get the idea for this book?
I played with the idea for four or five years before I actually got around to writing the book. Book ideas generally come to me in scenes. I’ll suddenly visualize someone atop a runaway stagecoach or scrambling over a roof. Then I figure out who and why. The scene that popped into my head for Cowboy Charm School was a wedding scene with a man running down the church aisle yelling, “Stop the Wedding!”
It took me awhile to figure out that the man was a Texas Ranger who thinks he’s saving the bride from marrying an outlaw. He’s mistaken, of course, but his accusations cause the couple to break up. It’s only right that he tries to get them back together, again.
I can’t wait to read this. What a great plot! 🙂
Can you name one of the most memorable characters you’ve written and explain why they still stand out to you?
Once I’m done with a book, I pretty much put it out of my mind. It’s the only way I can give my full attention to any work progress. However, there is one exception: the heroine in A Lady Like Sarah.
Readers won’t let me forget her and though the book was published several years ago, I’m still receiving emails about her. In a nutshell: Sarah’s an outlaw; the hero’s a preacher and they are both in need of a miracle. I think the reason Sarah stands out in readers’ minds is that though she’s lived a hardscrabble life, she has a will of steel and a faith that’s enduring.
Since your books are set in the Old West, do you have a favorite location you love to visit?
I love to visit Texas, where most of my stories are set. Here in California where I live, I enjoy visiting the Gold Country. It really takes you back to the Old West!
What book are you reading right now?
Are you ready? I’m reading Art of Blacksmithing by Alex W. Bealer. No, I’m not thinking of changing professions. The hero in my current work is a blacksmith. Surprisingly, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read so far. The author makes the art of bending steel seem almost poetic.
This is awesome. You’re doing your research. I have no doubt your readers will love you for it! 🙂
Is there anything else you’d like to add? Any upcoming projects you can share with us?
I have a story in The Old West Christmas Brides collection that will be released in October. Also, the second book in the Haywire Brides series, Accidently Married to a Cowboy will be published next summer. Not bad for someone who flunked eight-grade English. Just don’t ask me to diagram a sentence!
I love to hear from readers.

Ah, so many hero loves. Still holding onto Brock from Catherine West’s Where Hope Begins, Thor from Joanne Bischof’s Sons of Blackbird Mountain and Cole from Ronie Kendig’s Tox Files series.
All three of those books are on my TBR list. I’m hoping to start Sons of Blackbird Mountain very soon! 🙂
I love Phillip from Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson! Humor and charm along with strength, honor, and vulnerability. My literary crush!
Aww, ever since I first saw that cover I knew I wanted to read it. I hope to meet Phillip soon. 😉 Thanks for sharing, Heidi!
Brock from Where Hope Begins
Ok, now more than one of you has mentioned this Brock. Seems like I’m gonna need to meet him. 😉 Thanks for visiting, Melanie!
Such a fun interview! I have always enjoyed reading several of Margaret’s books. A Lady like Sarah is a favorite. I also enjoyed Gunpowder Tea!
So glad you could join us, Trisha! Hope you get to read her newest book soon. 🙂
Mine would have to be Owen from The Heart of an Agent
(The Adirondack Pinkertons #2)
by Tracey J. Lyons Such a great book.
I haven’t heard of that book before, Deanne. Thanks for sharing!
oh my so many heros to choose from. i would have to say one of them is James from Ribbons of Steel series by Judith Pella & Tracie Peterson
I remember that series! So good!
Henry Buckmeyer from the Texas Romance series written by Caryl McAdoo. He stands out most in my mind as a hero to love. Thanks for the giveaway and good luck everyone.
I’ve heard about that series. Looks like a fun one. Thanks for sharing, Debbie.
I just finished Karen Witemeyer’s latest release and thought the main male character was an interesting, evolving hero. Don’t want to give away the story for those that haven’t read it.
I love Karen Witemeyer’s stories!!
“Fanny” from a “Tree Grows In Brooklyn.
Joan
I’ll have to look that book up. Thanks for sharing, Joan!
Jay Gatsby is one from the Great Gatsby! Thank you
I need to read that one. Thanks for stopping by, Linda.
There are so many awesome heroes in books I’ve read. Right now I’m loving Barclay Pearce from An Hour Unspent by Roseanna White.
I can’t wait to read that one. Love Roseanna White!
I find it impossible to pick a favorite hero. It tends to be the hero of whatever book I’m reading currently. The first book I read by Margaret Brownley was A Lady Like Sarah. I saw the trailer made for this book and knew I had to read it. I’ve enjoyed several books by her since then. I love her combination of humor, romance, and action.
I totally agree, Pam. So glad you could join us today. Good luck in the giveaway!
I just got done reading A Girl Called Ella Dessa by Karen Campbell Prough, wonderful book. So I’d have to say Ella Dessa right now.
Fun! I need to check out that story too. You all are mentioning some new ones to me. I love it!
How to pick a favorite hero? I will say most recently Thor from The Sons of Blackbird Mountain.
I sooooooo want to meet him. I absolutely loved Charlie from her book, The Lady and the Lionheart. 🙂
Ann Silver in “Full Disclosure” by Dee Henderson
Thanks for sharing, Barb. I should add that book to my TBR list too. 😉
My fictional hero would be Robin Hood. He stole from the rich and gave to the poor. I’m not sure that he went about this the right way but his heart was in the right place.
I love this, Janet. In my book I’m writing, the hero is a bit of an outlaw too, so I definitely understand the conflict. 🙂
Wow! I can’t even think, I have had so many while reading that I can’t pick just one. You do know, lol, that when someone asks what/who is my favorite . . ., I HATE that question, lol. It is just too hard to pick just one, it’s kind of like asking which of your children or grandchildren is your favorite, just can’t do it, lol.

Haha, sorry! I totally get that! I just love the conversation that comes out of it and the various answers y’all give. You have no idea how many times you guys have pointed me to another great story! 🙂
A fictional Hero would be Robin Hood. But, like Winne said Barclay from An Hour Unspent. He was true to his new convections and was patriotic.
I definitely want to read that book! So glad you could stop by, Paula. Good luck in the drawing!
