Interview with Beth Wiseman & GIVEAWAY | The Engrafted WordSavanna: Welcome to The Engrafted Word, Beth! Congratulations on your upcoming release, The Promise. What was your favorite thing about writing this story and what was the hardest part about writing it?

Beth:  The Promise is inspired by actual events. At the time that the real life story was unfolding, I never imagined that I would write about the horrific details. But God never wastes a hurt, and eventually He nudged me to write the story. While fictional, many of the things in the book actually happened. Someone close to me was held captive in Pakistan, and I had to work with the State Department, Consulate in Pakistan, and the Embassy in Islamabad to get her home. I built The Promise around many of these events. The bar was high for this book. It was unlike anything I’d done in the past, and since I was writing out of my comfort zone in a new genre, my editor really pushed me—often to tears. But if she hadn’t done that, I don’t think I would have had the courage to keep pushing forward with a story that was so incredibly close to my heart. In the end, I’m humbled, proud, and amazed with the book we ended up with—truly a team effort.

Interview with Beth Wiseman & GIVEAWAY | The Engrafted WordSavanna:  Wow! I can imagine. I love to read how God used a difficult situation to teach you and bless you. What a wonderful thing for us all to remember – God never wastes a hurt.

If readers could only take away one lesson from this story, what do you hope it would be?

Beth:  There are several things I hope readers take away from the story. First, no matter how much you talk to someone on the Internet, you don’t know them. Secondly, as Americans we are largely detached from events going on around the world, and I hope and pray that this story will keep even one woman from falling victim to the kind of scam that Mallory falls for in The Promise. And lastly, God always has a plan—not necessarily what we are praying for, but He answers our prayers in ways we cannot imagine.

Savanna: You’ve won multiple writing awards. What has been one of the greatest lessons and fondest memories from participating in these contests?

Beth:  I’ve won the Carol Award through ACFW twice. The first time was amazing, humbling, and just beyond anything I could have hoped for in my career. I’ve since won the Holt Medallion, three Inspirational Readers Choice Awards, and another Carol Award. But accepting that first Carol Award was so wonderful. I strive daily to be grateful and humble. I know that I’ve been blessed, that God has gifted me with stories to tell, and I pray that I do it in a way that glorifies Him.

Interview with Beth Wiseman & GIVEAWAY | The Engrafted WordSavanna: Can you tell us what first sparked your interest in writing Amish fiction?

Beth:  I didn’t know anything about the Amish when I first started writing about these wonderful people. I did tons of research, and it was obviously a hot topic. Many of us got our ‘big break’ writing Amish fiction. But it was easy for me, and that’s because God opened one door after the other. I met Amish friends, I learned about their ways, and God fed me the stories He wanted shared.

Savanna: On your website you mentioned loving to travel. What’s one of your favorite destinations?

Beth:  That’s a tough question. I love new places, and while I love peaceful surroundings like Amish Country in Pennsylvania, I occasionally like to going on a shopping frenzy in New York City. I love Broadway. But, like I said, I am just as happy riding in an Amish buggy down the back roads of Paradise, Pennsylvania. My dream vacation—to go to Italy and attend cooking school. I am constantly on a mission to create the perfect lasagna.

Interview with Beth Wiseman & GIVEAWAY | The Engrafted WordSavanna:  How fun would that be?! 😉 And tasty too!

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Any upcoming projects you can share with us?

Beth:  I’m fortunate to be able to alternate between Amish stories and non-Amish novels. It’s the best of both worlds. I am starting a new series titled Amish Secrets, and I’m currently finishing up book #1 in that series—My Brother’s Keeper. I have quite a few Amish novellas on the horizon, and my next full-length novel will be non-Amish.

Savanna:  Sounds great! Thank you so much for being with us today, Beth.  Where can people find out more about you and your books?

Beth:   I offer the first chapter for free for each of my books, and those links are available at www.bethwiseman.com. It’s an opportunity to sample each of my novels/novellas before you buy. I also hang out at Fans of Beth Wiseman on Facebook. We have a lot of fun there and some fantastic conversations.
