Savanna: Welcome to The Engrafted Word, Anne! Congratulations on your recent release, Playing by Heart. Which character in this story do you most relate to and why?
Anne: That is always a tough question! I think in Playing by Heart I most relate to Lula’s sister, Jewel. I’m a big sister, too, and I know that feeling of wanting good things for your younger siblings and for your own children. I also identify with her in that she is a woman trying desperately to love and care for her children and others in spite of the her own heartbreaks and disappointments.
Savanna: Many readers enjoy picking their favorite quotes from novels. Do YOU have a particular favorite quote from your latest novel that you can share with us?
Anne: On my last read-through before publication, this quote jumped off the page at me:
“Prove you have it in you to live your convictions without resentment towards those who don’t understand or agree.” —Chet Vaughn
I don’t necessarily do that well!
Savanna: That’s a great quote!
Out of all the places you’ve traveled to for researching your books, what’s been one of your favorite places to visit?
Anne: When I think of research trips, my favorite has to be Indianapolis, IN for At Every Turn. First, I had a dear friend who went with me, so that made it fun. But the best part was that it was truly a weekend of “stumbling” over several key pieces of research. I love how God does that! We truly felt Him “at every turn” and it was a fascinating and lovely city to visit, too.
Savanna: It’s clear to see that history is very important to you. If you had to pick just one historical figure from the past, who would you enjoy meeting in person and why?
Anne: Abigail Adams. I did a huge paper on her in college and admire her very much, not only for her strength of character and her amazing mind but for the evidence of her faith that shows so clearly through her extensive correspondence with her husband, son and others.
Savanna: What was your favorite book as a child?
Anne: That’s tough. I’ve been a voracious reader since I could decipher letters into words. I read all of the Little House books numerous times, but I think it was reading The Secret Garden in 6th grade that took my book-loving to a whole new level.
Savanna: What will you do to celebrate your new release?
Anne: I usually have a big book launch book signing at a bookstore near my home, but that is looking difficult to fit around other things this year, so I guess my celebrations will be my online Book Banter that Bethany House hosts on Facebook and there will also be a big online giveaway, but I don’t have those details yet! Personally, I’ll just smile and sigh in wonder, once more, at what God has done!
Savanna: That sounds wonderful, Anne. I’m so happy for you and I’m so glad we got to chat today. Thanks for sharing with us!
