Savanna: Welcome to the blog, Candace. I’m so happy to have you here! Congrats on your recent and upcoming releases by the way! You’ve been busy. 😉
Candace: It’s a delight to join you, Savanna, and have this opportunity to connect with your readers. I have been busy: a novella and a full length novel out this year, plus one more “in the hopper” for release in early 2016. Writing and baking bread—dear hubby gave me a bread machine for Christmas and I can’t stop trying recipes!
Savanna: A new bread machine sounds wonderful! I bet your house smells so nice with fresh bread in the air. 😉
So tell us how the idea for your next story, Step by Step, first came to you.
Candace: Step by Step (Crisis Team #2) is the continued story of ER nurse Taylor Cabot first introduced in By Your Side. Her firefighter husband was killed in a tragic accident and she’s approaching her 3rd anniversary as a widow (“an exclusive club no one wants to belong to”). Taylor is determined to move on with her life, to the point of having a Survival Checklist. But, of course, life has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn’t it? Especially when God has lessons to teach. As a person who has struggled (still struggles, admittedly) with the need for control, I was challenged by the idea of a character who attempts to micromanage one of the most difficult of human journeys: grief. I even gave Taylor a “Fitbit” activity tracker like I have (counting calories, daily exercise) as she moves forward “step by step” into her new future. It is ultimately a story of hope . . . and love. I’m eager to share it with readers.
Savanna: That’s exciting, Candace. Sounds like a great story! Since beginning your novelist career, is there anything you miss from your days as an ER nurse?
Candace: (Smile) I have finally stopped shouting “Incoming!” at the sound of sirens. But, seriously, I do miss the amazing camaraderie of the ER team and, most certainly, those poignant moments of connection with my patients. Writing “medical hope opera,” however, lets me relive those experiences and invite readers to “scrub in,” as well. It’s wonderful.
Savanna: You’ve had some handsome heroes in your stories. 😉 What’s one of your favorite book covers?
Candace: My guys have become legendary—to the point of having readers selflessly volunteer to supervise the photo shoot when my publisher uses live models! The cover of Rescue Team was one of those live shoots. The character of Wes Tanner (a search and rescue volunteer) was portrayed by a very handsome young military man who recently returned from two tours in Afghanistan. There’s a real life hero on that book cover. I love it!
Savanna: Wow! How cool! 🙂 What would you say is your favorite part about being an author? What’s the hardest part for you?
Candace: My favorite part (other than the fact I could work in my jammies if I wanted to) is my readers. Absolutely. I love hearing from them, meeting them (and chatting with them on Facebook). When someone takes the time to send a note (and they often do), to share how a particular story touched their lives and offered hope, it is the best feeling in the world. It reminds me, every time, that writing is a calling from God. I never take that lightly.
The hardest part of being an author is maintaining a healthy balance between a happy personal life (family, friends, faith, R &R) with the considerable time demands of writing. Honestly, authors would make great jugglers.
Savanna: Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?
Candace: One special favorite is Jeremiah 29:11. There is no better medicine than hope, and our loving God promises that.
Savanna: I love that one too! Is there anything else you’d like to share? What project(s) are you currently working on?
Candace: I like to let folks know that I’m delighted to join book groups via Skype. We’ve had such fun doing that, and I always plan little bonus surprises for the members. Just send me a note through my website.
Meanwhile, I’m busy finishing up the third book in the Crisis Team series, Maybe It’s You. I believe it is slated for release in February 2017.
Savanna: Sounds GREAT, Candace! Thank you for being with us today. Have a blessed Christmas!
Candace: Thank you, Savanna, it’s been a delight to be hosted here. And I’m happy to offer a signed copy of By Your Side (Crisis Team #1) as a giveaway—good luck to all!

oh.hell.hiya@gmail.com
I’ve never heard of those before, Danie. I’ll have to find a recipe. 😉 Thanks for stopping by!
These sound like great books! Thank you, Candace and Savanna!!
Thanks for joining us, Katrina. Good luck too! 🙂
Always the cookies! Molasses are my favorite for the holidays.
Those sound sooo good, Heidi! I think I’m going to have to go bake some cookies myself now. 😉
I like baking bread too. But for the holidays I like baking cookies and pies more. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
It’s hard to beat cookies and pies. 😉 Thanks for visiting, Janet. Merry Christmas to you too!
At Christmas time I enjoy baking gingerbread men.
Fun, Laurie! A friend of mine always makes gingerbread houses. I think it looks fun, but I’m afraid to try it. Me and baking and crafts don’t always mix well. 😉
I like to make cookies with my daughters, something I don’t do as much as I should.
I know, Ellen, I enjoy baking, but I always seem to run out of time. It’s special when you can share the kitchen with your loved ones. 😉 Merry Christmas!
I enjoy baking Christmas cookies with my children and my mom.
Sounds like fun, Heather! Thanks for sharing. 😉 Have a blessed Christmas!
I prepared cookies just yesterday for a cookie swap. What fun!
I bet they were delicious too! 😉 I love this time of year, don’t you?
I love baking pumpkin break in the fall and through the holidays.
Also I had some fresh cranberries left from Thanksgiving, so tried a cranberry break recipe I came across on FB. It tasted wonderful, but you could hardly cut a slice off to eat without it falling apart=( yet it wasn’t dry. Can’t quite figure out what the problem was.
Pumpkin bread is one of my favorite things to bake, Patty!! Wish I could help you out with the cranberry recipe, but I’m afraid I’m not too familiar with that. Merry Christmas!
I like to bake gingersnaps to give to friends.
Isn’t it fun to share your baked goodies with friends? Love that, Bonnie. Hope you have a blessed holiday season!
How exciting and honorable – saving lives! Candace, thanks for stopping in with Savanna for us to get to know you and your books. You’re a new author to me, so I’ll be looking forward to reading your books.
As to baking, this time of the year, sugar cookies! And beautifully decorated too. Unfortunately for me, I’m not much of a baker. So I leave it to the hubs to take care of that. I guess it’s more unfortunate for him and fortunate for me to get to eat yummy cookies without baking it myself! LOL. (I do help with the cookie cutters *wink wink).
Hi Annie! I’m so excited to introduce you to Candace and her books. I hope you’ll get the chance to check out her stories soon. 😉
Sugar cookies… yum! And a hubby who bakes? You’re lucky. 😉 I’m afraid mine isn’t much of a chef, but then neither am I! Gotta keep it simple around here. 😉
Happy Holidays!
Of course cookies! We also like baking cinnamon rolls in the winter.
Cinnamon rolls sound SO good right now. I think just talking about baking here is getting me hungry. 🙂 Thanks for visiting, Beth!
Cookies with lots of Christmas sprinkles! My favorite is sugar cookies in Christmas shapes with yummy vanilla frosting.
I can so picture that right now, Amanda. 🙂 We made a lot of those in our house growing up. My sister, especially, was a fan of the sprinkles!
Congratulations, Candace, on By Your Side being chosen as a Top Ten Inspirational Fiction for 2015!
I’m looking forward to reading Step by Step. 🙂
Isn’t that exciting?! So glad you could join us, Anne. I hope you have a blessed holiday!
I forgot to tell you what I enjoy baking. Years ago I baked a lot of cookies, mostly Sugar cookies pressed out in different shapes. I bake Chocolate Chip Cookies now because I cheat and use the pre-made dough from Sam’s Club. I know. Shocking to admit! 🙂
Haha! You’re not the only one, Anne! 😉 Even just cookie dough by itself is yummy!
I like baking Gluten free bread monthly…when my children were growing up, I baked LOTS of cookies! They enjoyed helping to decorate the sugar cookies!
Sounds like some special memories, MS Barb! Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas!
This time of year I like baking bread and a sour cream pound cake.
Sounds delicious, Jan! Hope you have a blessed Christmas!
Such a joy to be hosted here–and a delight to read all the comments. You are making my mouth water with the baked goodies. Christmas traditions are so wonderful. I bake gingerbread cookies every year, and love piping my grand children’s names on them. Even better, some of the grands are old enough to help bake now–priceless.
Good luck to each of you on the signed book giveaway!
Thank you so much for stopping by to comment, Candace. It was a joy to have you with us this week. (And congrats again on that new great grandbaby of yours!) 🙂 Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas! Enjoy those gingerbread cookies too. 😉
I try to avoid baking =) but enjoy making candy cane bark and chocolate covered pretzels.
Hey, those sound just as delicious, Katy! And fun to make too, I bet. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I usually bake my from-scratch pumpkin pies (using Sugar Pie Pumpkins I pick out of the Farmer’s market and cook myself) & a batch of chocolate chip cookies for Christmas dinner. I honestly don’t bake as much as I used to, we simply don’t need to eat like that anymore….much to the chagrin of my husband that is, lol! But he knows I’ve been cooking healthier for our good 🙂
I really enjoyed the author interview. Your favorite scripture is mine as well. It reminds me that God has His best interest in mind for me no matter the circumstance. And I can rest in knowing He’s in control. Isn’t that a wonderful feeling? 🙂
I also didn’t realize you were a former ER nurse! Writing stories from your experience in the field would make them more realistic! My mom is a retired LPN and I have many family members in the medical field, I believe one of my aunts is an ER nurse too. It’s a fascinating profession, I went through CNA classes with the intent of eventually becoming an LPN but I found out real quick I couldn’t stomach some things….lol! It’s not for everybody & I sure admire those in your field of work! Thank you for the chance to win a copy of “By Your Side”! I love medical fiction, (think Harry Kraus or Richard Mabry)so I’d know I’d enjoy your books.
Savanna, your introductions of new-to-me authors are much appreciated as you add to my reading addiction…haha! I LOVE it 🙂
Hi Trixi! The sweet treats you mentioned sound tasty! 🙂 So glad you could join us for the giveaway.
I agree, I highly respect those in the medical field, but I couldn’t stomach it myself for sure. Everyone has their callings, right? 🙂 I’m thrilled to introduce you to another great author. Here’s to your great list and bookshelves full of stories still to read… hope it never runs out. 😉
